After improving the aesthetic appearance of the bay window, it was my opinion that the adjacent front porch now looked rather ugly. The existing glazed part of the porch is not an original feature. I suspect the original porch was an open design similar to the one shown here.
The problems with the existing porch include: corroded and failing nails holding on the roof tiles; a fractured, uneven concrete floor; spalling bricks and ugly pointing; the existing glazed wooden frame being featureless (I'm sure more could be done to match the porch to the period of the house); perhaps most significantly the asymmetry of the design.
The bottom line here is that, if I am to do anything, a redesign and complete rebuild would be the only option to satisfy me. Although I would aim to retain as much of the original roof as possible.
Asking an architect to come up with a solution was out of the question, I wanted to do this project at a reasonable cost, commissioning a niche art deco specialist! well I would rather spend that kind of money on err .......a new car?. What about looking through architectural books and the internet? Believe me I spent hours trawling through this material but found nothing on suburban porches. In truth that’s what inspired me to write these pages, to put something out there that might help other home improving “suburbanists”.
How about a uPVC construction? Well I wanted to give the porch some character and match it in with the rest of the house. I hadn’t seen any company’s products that would give me that flexibility, plus I wasn’t too keen to add further white plastic to the front of the house.
Therefore as you may have guessed from the start, the outcome of all this was yes, I decided to have a go myself.
